From Latin
chorus, from Ancient Greek
χορός (choros)
The group plays Irish and Sweden
folk music, Balkan melodies, French dances, music
of Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque epochs.
But folk-music in general is unbounded, unlimited
and inexhaustible. That is why the group is
constantly extending its horizons and focuses not
only on Western folk, but also looks at the
Orient.
Chorus appeared at the beginning of the new
millennium. Current members: Vadim Bahramov
and Darya Makoeva. Before establishing
"Chorus” Vadim played dead metal in a group from
Rostov-on-Don called “Drugger”. But everything
changes and he left mortally heavy riffs for
pleasing the ear roulades on an exotic instrument
Bouzouki. Such
an abrupt change of style may seem
strange to somebody, but don’t forget about the
example of Ritchie Blackmore. The latter explained
his leaving hard music by the fact that he had not
gone far really, as musical systems of rock and
European folk music are not so different as one
may think (favorite intervals of representatives
of both styles are fourths and fifths: hardrockers
can't live without playing ponderously on fifths
while folk musicians avoid thirds when playing
music of some cultures). Besides, according to
Blackmore, acoustic music is more sincere (that is
why more vulnerable), whereas playing hard you can
hide yourself behind the grinding distortion
sound. “Chorus” traveled a lot around Russia
and quite often visited European countries,
playing in the streets and gaining experience. The
group plays Irish and Sweden folk music, Balkan
melodies, French dances, music of Middle Ages,
Renaissance and Baroque epochs. But folk-music in
general is unbounded, unlimited and inexhaustible.
That is why the group is constantly extending its
horizons and focuses not only on Western folk, but
also looks at the Orient. Now Vadim is mastering
one more exotic instrument – oud (Arabian
lute).
Members of the group changed throughout
the years, and now the core consists of Vadim
Bahramov (bouzouki, oud, darbuka)
and his wife Darya Makoeva (fiddle,
whistle, recorder, nyckelharpa,
hardingfele). May be
after a little while there will appear one more
constant band member – their daughter Masha, who
is now three years old. For the present Chorus is
assisted by session musicians Alexander Murzakov
(guitar) and Andrey Nikolaev
(percussion) (both are from
Taganrog, South of Russia). As the group is
constantly on-the-move quite often there is no
time to go to a studio and record an album. But
after a few years they did have such an
opportunity. At present there is a collection of
songs from different live performances simply
called “Chorus” and recently
released album
“The Saga of
Wanderings”.
